    Reggae Roast present Jamdown

The Reggae Roast Jamdown is a new series of momentous events at Plan B, Brixton over the next 12 months and beyond.

    - £5 Early Bird tickets – SOLD OUT

    - £8 Advanced tickets – ON SALE – HERE

The Jamdown sessions will showcase the best roots reggae, dub, dubstep & jungle music from across the globe. Each event will feature a selection of top dubwise acts, supported by the renowned Reggae Roast residents DJs & singers. Situated in the heart of Brixton, Plan B is arguably the best club venue in south London, with a reputation for top quality programing, sound system and atmosphere.

The first Jamdown event showcases a selection of artists from the reggae roast records roster. Each of the headline acts have served up critically acclaimed 12” releases on the Reggae Roast imprint over the past 3 years. For this mammoth first event we have decided to bring them all together, displaying the full effect of the reggae roast movement. We have also drafted in some additional special guests to nice up the dance, including 9-piece live act; OnlyJoe and south London stalwart DJ Snuff.

Headlining the event are Mungo’s Hifi who have been hotter than lava this year! Having hosted the legendary Mungo’s courtyard arena at Outlook festival and releasing a string of massive releases on their Scotch Bonnet label, the Glasgow based super group are seemingly unstoppable. Pioneering a pounding, 21st century rub-a-dub style, Mungo’s Hifi have been serving up some serious riddims, featuring celebrated vocalists such as Movado, Sugar Minot and Earl 16. Not to mention their standout remix on the ‘Reggae Music’ EP released on Reggae Roast Records in May this year.

RSD, perhaps better known as Bristol bass and drum music legend Rob Smith and one half of the respected production duo Smith and Mighty, has been pushing bass heavy rhythms for more than two decades. He remains firmly at the forefront of Bristol’s endlessly inventive music scene, with a staggering discography and a range of projects encompassing dub, drum and bass, 2-step and dubstep.

Adding a live injection to the proceedings, Kenny Knots & Ruben Da Silva will both perform 30-min PA sets, playing classic tracks including ‘Watch How the People Dancing’ and ‘Bless A Sound’ not to mention exclusives performances of ‘Sensi Skank’ & ‘Love Light’, forthcoming on Reggae Roast Records. Also playing on the night will be Reggae Roast founders Exel & Moodie and resident selector; Dub Hunter. The sessions will be hosted by the one and only Ramon Judah.

This first Jamdown event will set the tone for what promises to be one of London’s leading and most innovative dubwise experiences. The next 12 months will see Plan B play host to an exceptional selection of artists in a showcase style, giving dub enthusiasts an unforgettable night out.

Forthcoming artists include Rhythm & Sound, David Rodigan, Aba Shanti-I & many more. There will be no better place in the capital to enjoy the many manifestations of dub. Limited £5 Advanced Early Bird Tickets On Sale NOW!

Lele Saveri – Incubi et Succubi

Tonight sees the launch of Photographer Lele Saveri‘s first solo book, Incubi et Succubi, at Donlon Books, Broadway Market.

Lele Saveri hails from Rome Italy and after spending 7 years in London then back home, he now resides in NYC. His work is cross of documentary and portrait photography blending the two with ease in his own unique style. Lele works a personal and informal angle on his subjects capturing a side to people that many of us let go unnoticed. Right in with all the cool kids on the scene Lele worked as photo editor for Vice Italy and Vogue over in New York and not to mentoin working with me at Jessops here in london (he’ll thank me for that later!) he returns to london for the launch of this latest body of work Incubi et Succubi.

    Press Release:
Incubi et Succubi is the first solo book by the photographer Lele Saveri.
Shot between Europe and America, it is a collection of images that draws a
path through religion, folklore, obsessions and phobias.
This visual tale combines ancient religious festivals in Sicily, haunted houses in
Staten Island, different species of snakes in New Jersey, and the hidden catacombs
    in the Roman underworld.
The title refers to the Succubus figure that guides the viewer throughout the journey,
like in the mythological belief that the demons Incubus and Succubus appear
in men and women’s dreams to seduce them—and then to take their souls

Check some of the beautiful images from the book below:

And a word from Lele himself:
“When I first started taking pictures I was mostly into reportage and slowly I
moved towards a more abstract, less informative photography. It was natural for
me to merge these two different visions of reality into one. In the book I combine
reportage—events in which I have no power except that of recording— and
staged photos, all to tell my very own story.”
“In Rome, where I grew up, fear has a very unique meaning. On one side is the
Vatican and its constant battle against the Devil, on the other is what [Roman
horror director] Dario Argento tells with his movies. I’ve always been fascinated
by both. When I was a kid, my grandma scared me with stories of the monks of
Saint Mary of the Prayer and Death coming out at night, in search of dead bodies
of homeless people to bury in the crypt underneath their church. I never dared to
go in until this year, to photograph the skulls you see in the book.”

Sick Boy – Heaven & Earth | TONIGHT

Dray Walk, The Old Truman Brewery,
    91 Brick Lane,
    London, E1 6QL

    November 3-6

A celebration of earthly sins and heavenly fantasies, with collaborations from some of the biggest names in the global scene, Heaven & Earth sees Sickboy figuratively fall from grace into one of his own worlds, calling upon 12 art figureheads to plunge into the depths of darkest conscious…

Presenting an entirely new body of work, Sickboy also presents four major installations which include a walk-in confessional booth (with a resident pastor who will be appearing at various service times throughout the opening), and an installation which sees a who’s who of eminent artists joining Sickboy on his cathartic journey including: D*Face, Eine, Anthony Lister, Paul Insect, Vhils, Conor Harrington, Xenz, Word to Mother, Will Barras, Eelus, Mudwig and Hush – all of whom feature in a special collaborative element of the show.

The art exorcism doesn’t just end there. After years of brainwashing the public with his temple and slogans such as ‘Save the Youth’, Sickboy is expanding his ethos of ‘art for the people’ and inviting the global public to become part of his show by submitting their anonymous confessions to him, which will become one of the main installations, entitled CONFESS.

Kelsey Brookes, Desires of the Soul Exhibition

    The Outsiders

    8 Greek Street
    Soho
    London
    W1D 4DG

    Nov 4th 2011 – Nov 26th 2011
    Private View: 3rd Nov, 6-9pm

American artist, Kelsey Brookes, is a former biochemist whose character and style was developed by an education system “that refused to teach scientists to draw”. Three years into his studies he abandoned biochemistry for art fearing he had ‘become the person he had always despised’.

However Science’s loss is art’s gain, and Kelsey began developing his explosive and bold style, showcasing for the first time in London in 2007 at Santa’s Ghetto. Kelsey now returns exhibiting a solo show at The Outsiders Gallery on Greek Street this month. His vibrant celebration of colour and pattern combining mixed-media ensembles of sex, animals and energetic characters leads to an exciting and energetic exhibition.

    Supergraphics – Transforming Space

Supergraphics – Transforming Space: Graphic Design for Walls, Building and Spaces, takes you through the Supergraphics movement from it’s early days and allows you to look at the work of some of the leading contemporary designers in this field.

Supergraphics, now more commonly known as Environmental graphics was an architectural movement in the 60s and 70s that’s fundamental aim was to ‘remove solidity, gravity, even history’ by applying graphics and paint to the interior and exterior surfaces of building.

As one architectural writer noted at the time:

‘… niches of architects and designers began experimenting with Supergraphics to emulate the spatial effects of architecture. These designers distorted perspective with stripes and arrows, emphasized wayfinding and movement sequences with surface designs, joined community groups to paint illustrative graphics over blighted buildings, and played with scale by using billboarding tactics.’

The explosive take-off saw Supergraphics as an exciting and daring time for design; it was all about being big and bold, taking over a space, recreating it and finding a solution that pushes the boundaries. Today the term Supergraphics mainly applies to any mega-scale graphics and while not much of the work now days connects to the ideologies of it’s originals, this book shows large scale work being produced all around the world that still contains that ‘big’ and ‘daring’ factor which originated from the 1960s movement.
